The client sought our assistance in designing a modest house on a laneway block in Mount Hawthorn to suit the needs of this recently widowed grandmother who loves painting and hosting her grandchildren from the country. The house features a north-facing courtyard, tandem parking on the south side, and connects to Flinders Street via a common pedestrian access. It boasts a 45 degree pitched roof to give it a cottage aesthetic and to accommodate the upper level of the house. Internally, two bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the ground floor, as well as the main living areas. The upstairs is a large open plan loft which includes a void over the dining / lounge room area and a balcony overlooking the laneway. This space is suitable for painting, reading and computer work but also works well to accommodate the grandchildren on swags when they come to stay. The house is constructed of double brick (exterior face brick) with a Colorbond roof.
