64 The Strand, Bayswater WA

We were commissioned to design a contemporary home behind an existing house in Bayswater. The brief included the need to focus the house on a shared courtyard adjacent to an existing large tree that sat between the houses. The client’s mother occupies the front home, so it was important to have a shared space where they could socialise. The house includes a large open plan living and dining area, as well as a separate office and TV watching space downstairs. A thermal wall facing north heats the living space during winter, and encloses a smaller private courtyard in the northern corner of the site. Upstairs, swooping monitors let light into each bedroom from above. The industrial aesthetic of the home is tempered by eclectic touches to make it cozier such as recycled timber doors, concrete floors with inset timber, textured brick fireplace, and lighting effects that create a diffuse and warm interior environment. The home achieves an excellent thermal rating of 8 stars.
